The Australian Rugby Union today congratulated the 2016 BMW Junior Gold Cup Champions Western Sydney in the U17s and Western Australia in the U15s age divisions.
In the U15s Western Australia defeated the ACT in a thrilling encounter in Perth to claim the title, 24-14 whilst in the U17s Western Sydney side defeated Brisbane City 38-3 to win the senior age division.
The match was played at Suncorp Stadium before the Queensland Reds v NSW Waratahs clash, giving the young representative players a match day experience to remember.
ARU General Manager High Performance, Ben Whitaker: “On behalf of the Australian Rugby community I congratulate Western Australia and Western Sydney on the winning the U15 and U17 BMW Junior Gold Cup for 2016.
“We also congratulate the fantastic achievements of the ACT and Brisbane City as runners up in both divisions. We would like to acknowledge and thank all players, coaches, support staff and families for the huge effort they have made throughout the program.
“Pre-season for this competition started in November last year and throughout the rounds included over 1200 participants across 24 centres and 106 matches in 7 weeks around Australia.
“The teams competing across the conference and competition finals included teams from Brisbane, West Sydney, Western NSW, Canberra and Perth highlighting the strong national reach the JGC has been able to build over the three years since inception.”
The BMW Junior Gold Cup is an important stepping stone in the ARU’s Pathway to Gold Program.
The Pathway to Gold is the ARU’s Pathways program which is designed to create the next generation of elite talent in all forms of Australian Rugby.
